VELOCITY talks: Meeting Place for Refreshing Ideas
Nurah Abdulkadir: Westergasfabriek, Amsterdam
15 May 2014
5.30 - 7.30pm

The Westergasfabriek in Amsterdam is regarded as a model for redevelopment, far beyond the Netherlands’ borders.  The former gasworks has grown to be one of the defining centers for culture, creative industry and events in the city.  People come to the Westergasfabriek to meet, work and relax.  This beautiful city park, with its historic factory buildings surrounded by expanses of green, also has workplaces, venues for large and small events, and a range of catering, film, theatre and exhibition facilities.

The present state of the Westergasfabriek and the surrounding park is the result of the successful efforts and collaboration between the local government and the Westergasfabriek BV - an unsubsidized cultural enterprise run without government funding.  In the everyday business commerce and culture go hand in hand.  The Westergasfabriek encourages the use of its spaces for creative events, ensuring the area keeps its exciting and refreshing atmosphere through cultural projects and collaborations between their business tenants. www.westergasfabriek.com

VELOCITY presents a series of regular talks and conversations inviting speakers to address issues arising from the VELOCITY programme. The events also offer networking opportunities for VELOCITY stakeholders: professionals working in city planning and urban regeneration, creative practitioners, artists, architects, designers, producers and arts professionals.

The talks programme is supported by Creative Scotland and The Lighthouse.
