George Square : Redesigned 09 Jan 2013 – 05 Feb
Long Gallery & Digital Design Gallery

The original aspiration behind the design of George Square, in the eighteenth century, was to create 'La Grande-Place' for Glasgow. It began as a garden, with trees, lawns and fences, and, over time, was populated with statues celebrating the achievements of distinguished Scots.

However, like public spaces in most post-industrial cities of the late twentieth century, George Square has been subjected to significant pressures and has been compromised to such an extent, that its loss of dignity is all too apparent.

It is therefore time for George Square to regain its former status - and what better opportunity than for the city's hosting of the Commonwealth Games, in 2014, when a world audience will view this square, not just as Glasgow's, but as Scotland's premier urban space?

The international competition for the redesign of George Square has attracted world-wide attention. The six shortlisted design teams who are in the second stage of the competition will submit their proposals for adjudication in early 2013 and will be on display at The Lighthouse using Glasgow City Council's Digital Urban Model. The Winner will be announced on the 18th of January.
