To coincide with our current exhibition Weather Forms, in the first of a series of informal talks, we present a special screening of May Miles Thomas’ film, The Devil’s Plantation followed by a talk between the exhibition’s creator, Paul Stallan of Stallan-Brand and May Miles Thomas of Elemental Films.
The screening will take place at The Lighthouse on Thursday 26th May from 7.00pm - 9.30pm. The screening is free but places must be reserved in advance here.
Weather Forms critically celebrates a responsive architecture borne of Scotland with international applications by exploring how climate defines us, challenging the popular idea that ‘people make places’. Through multi-disciplinary practice, Stallan-Brand provocatively position their architecture as an extension of the sublime tradition in Scottish art: a practice on the edge of the world.
Described by Scotland on Sunday as ‘beautiful, languorous, sinister and weirdly empty,’ The Devil’s Plantation was conceived as an immersive online experience, winning Best Interactive Project at the BAFTA New Talent awards in 2010. Reworked as an app and a feature film, May Miles Thomas’ work describes the extraordinary journeys of Harry Bell, author of Glasgow’s Secret Geometry and Mary Ross, an ex-psychiatric patient. Their separate quests invite the viewer on a mesmeric psychogeographic excursion in and around Glasgow.
The screening will be followed by a conversation between architect and filmmaker that explores how place, memory and weather impact on their respective creative practices. Referencing the Scottish Sublime and the constituent elements of ‘awe’ borne of a unique national and local psyche, their talk compares notions of cultural distinctiveness and questions the relevance – or not – of a discrete aesthetic in today’s post-industrial, globally-connected, knowledge-driven landscape.
