PARAMUS: Other Forms of Living Nature 18 May 2015
by Javier Vidal Aguilera

"Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul." - John Muir

After visiting the Scottish moorlands for the first time, Javier started developing ideas involving the creation of imaginary structures that mediate between people and nature.  With this in mind, he started designing spaces to express our psychological connection with open landscapes and to explore the primordial human instinct of trying to find shelter from exposure.

As part of his ongoing research, Javier creates a dialogue between the visitor and the open landscape, paying special attention to sensitive landscapes that require some degree of protection or mediation for their preservation. PARAMUS brings together two contexts, one in Javier´s homeland, Galicia, and the other in the Scottish Hebrides, through proposals of hypothetical structures that seek to sharpen people´s perception of the natural environment. The two structures are adapted to the morphology of the landscape to function as temporary dwelling for observation and interaction with nature.

This exhibition is an exploration of how it is possible to materialise a spatial idea that becomes a filter between us and the natural landscape, and will feature digital drawings and architectural models.

Architect (ARB) and MFA graduate, Javier reflects on the boundary between art, design and architecture, to highlight the importance of creating spaces that enhance our experience in the natural environment. His body of multidisciplinary work also includes art installations, hand drawings and sculptures.
