Gillespie, Kidd & Coia Architecture 1956 - 1987 (12306)

Gillespie, Kidd & Coia: Architecture 1956 – 1987 was created by The Lighthouse, Scotland’s Centre for Architecture, Design and the City. The Lighthouse worked in partnership with The Glasgow School of Art and Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS) to create a programme that celebrates the work of Gillespie, Kidd & Coia from 1956 – 1987.

The programme comprised of: this major publication published in conjunction with the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS); an exhibition at The Lighthouse from 3rd November 2007 – February 10th 2008; website; education and outreach programme and the cataloguing and conserving of the Gillespie, Kidd & Coia archive held at The Glasgow School of Art.

Based in Glasgow, Gillespie, Kidd & Coia’s imaginative approach to architecture resulted in a wide range of exceptional buildings throughout Scotland and England. Although Gillespie, Kidd & Coia were formed in 1927, the period between 1956 and 1987 was particularly fertile. During this period, Isi Metzstein and Andy MacMillan were at the company’s creative helm, and it is their work, which forms the subject of the publication.

Key authors have contributed 4 essays, a comprehensive study of all major works undertaken during this period, and a complete bibliography all annotated with archive illustrations and drawings from the Glasgow School of Art archive and RCAHMS. The publication promises to be the most thorough and rich guide to this period of the UK’s architectural history.

The book can also be purchased at the Glasgow School of Art with their contact details: shop@gsa.ac.uk or tel 0141 353 4526
