The Swiss Season
As part of our 10 year anniversary celebrations thoughout 2009,The Lighthouse presents a series of solo exhibitions profiling five exciting young designers based in Lausanne, Switzerland. All are graduates of the prestigious art and design school, ecal. Uniquely integrating graphics, photography and product development, and with strong links to industry, the school has produced a generation of designers whose work is characterised by the re-interpretation of everyday objects in a way that is refreshing but always functional.
BIG-GAME
BIG-GAME is a design studio created in 2004 by Elric Petit (Belgium), Grégoire Jeanmonod (Switzerland) and Augustin Scott de Martinville (France).
From furniture to industrial product, lighting to interior design, “The trio is known for its distinctive take on playful functionalism” (Anna Bates, ICON Magazine). Manipulating codes by amalgamating references, their work is unique and spontaneous whilst remaining functional and technically and economically viable.
For WORD PLAY, BIG-GAME show a selection of products. The titles of each object are references to the “actions” applied on the archetypes to transform them. The basic structure of a tubular chair turns BOLD, for instance, as it would in typography. In the same manner a lamp is born from the FOLD of a sheet of material and a chandelier appears as a LINK between light bulbs.
BIG-GAME work for companies as diverse as Habitat, Vlaemsch, Domestic, Moustache, Nespresso and Provins. A first monograph on BIG-GAME was published in 2008, for a retrospective exhibition held at the Musée du Grand-Hornu in Belgium.
