“The story of Gareth Hoskins Architects is an important element in the early 21st century revival of contemporary architecture in Scotland – an architectural movement that is notably original, outward-looking, and confident.” So writes Hugh Pearman in the introduction to the first in a series of architectural monographs to be published by The Lighthouse, Scotland’s national Architecture and Design Centre. Over the next five years the monographs and associated programme of exhibitions will celebrate the achievement of a new generation of architecture practices throwing a spotlight on their work as they emerge onto the international stage. The Lighthouse Architecture Series: Gareth Hoskins Architects exhibition runs at The Lighthouse, Glasgow from 12 September – 2 November 2008 and the RIBA Gallery, London from 30 January – 1 March 2009. The monograph will be launched at A Gathering Space, the Scottish presence at the 11th Architecture Biennale, on Thursday 11 September at the press view of this specially-designed structure, created for The Lighthouse by Gareth Hoskins Architects following an open, anonymous competition.
The choice of Gareth Hoskins Architects (GHA) as the first practice to be featured in the Lighthouse Architecture Series was natural. “As the practice celebrates it 10th anniversary this is an appropriate time to take stock of its achievements both in Scotland and beyond,” says Nick Barley Director of The Lighthouse. “One of Gareth’s first projects on establishing the practice was to design the Mackintosh Interpretation Centre for The Lighthouse, the flagship building of Glasgow 1999 City of Architecture and Design. Ten years on the Scottish architectural landscape has been enriched by many award-winning buildings designed by the practice, and Hoskins has flown the flag for the new generation of Scottish architects at home and abroad.”
If there were one aspect of Gareth Hoskins Architects work over the last ten years, which could be said to characterise the practice’s approach it would be the extent to which the understanding of place has been of paramount importance. The exhibition and monograph illustrate this through the presentation of a series of projects that encompass the range of the practice’s work, dividing it into five broad categories - In Town, Edge of Town, Rural, Within These Walls, and Cityscape. Within each category a number of featured buildings take the discourse forward. The exhibition features plans, models, photography and a series of four films by Gavin Turnbull each presenting one of the featured projects in detail (The Bridge Arts Centre, Easterhouse; Partick Centre for Community Health; Culloden Battle Memorial Centre, Inverness and The Royal Museum, Edinburgh).
